Heaven’s Appointment on Earth - Canvassing Story part 5

 Testimony of a Student Canvasser

I am deeply grateful to God for the opportunity to join a canvassing program with our team. Although I was nervous at first—especially since this was my first time going door to door to offer books—I was blessed to be surrounded by supportive teammates. Some had already gained experience in how to approach people respectfully and kindly, which helped ease my fears.

My first assignment was in the city of Bandung. That day, I was paired with our supervisor and a fellow student. I observed closely how they interacted with people, how they spoke, and how they introduced the books. I tried to follow their example, even though my words were still limited. Step by step, and with silent prayers in my heart, I began to grow in confidence—entering homes, small businesses, and shopfronts, all with the hope of planting seeds of hope through literature.

That afternoon, near the end of our canvassing time, our supervisor led us to a residential complex. There, I met a woman who kindly accepted a tract. As I continued walking through the area, I came across a man recovering from a stroke, assisted by his relative. I began a simple conversation with him and shared some encouragement, reminding him not to give up.

I invited him to walk a short distance with me—about 20 meters. I gently said, “Don’t be afraid, you can do this.” Though hesitant, he began to walk. I could see his confidence growing with each step. I called my supervisor to join us. When they arrived and offered words of encouragement as well, the man became emotional, touched by the support he received.

While this was happening, a couple on a motorcycle noticed us. A little later, they returned and began a conversation. Curious, they asked who we were. We explained that we were students raising scholarship funds through the distribution of inspirational and health books. The wife, a cook, became interested in one of our recipe books. After browsing through a few titles, they decided to support us and purchased a book, giving a donation.

Later, they invited us to their home. There, we learned that the wife was battling breast cancer, and her husband was a Christian minister. We spent time talking, praying for each other, and encouraging one another. That moment was filled with God’s presence. I knew in my heart that this was not a random meeting—it was a divine appointment.

I went home that evening with joy and renewed faith. That experience reminded me that the heart of canvassing is not in how many books we place, but in how God uses our presence, our kindness, and our willingness to serve to reach hearts in need.

“Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me.”
Matthew 25:40
